Since I came to Argentina all those centuries ago I have been asked many time by visitors what are the typical things to do here that are a must do to have that real Argentine experience. Course ask a million people and you will get a million different opinions but for what’s its worth here’s mine……………………..
|Asado on La Margarita|
Eat an asado. The definitive meal of Argentina consisting almost exclusively of meat cooked over a log fire and best enjoyed out in the open. Difficult to do for vegetarians but maybe for one meal you could be a meat eater. The asado is a religion here so it’s a must do or should I say eat!
Drink mate. Mate is like tea to the Brits and Coffee to the Yanks. Its is a herb that is grown in the north of Argentina and drinking it is almost a religion. It has its rules. Drunk hot from a bombilla (metal straw) from what’s called a mate (the liquid holder) it is an event for friends and friendship. The mate is passed round and each person drinks the contents and passes it back to the kettle holder who tops it up and passes in on to the next person. Slurping is considered rude and if you say gracias on passing it back to the kettle holder that means you don’t want any more. An Argentine must do love or hate it
Ride a horse across the pampas with a gaucho. No doubt about it Argentina is famous for beef namely cows and for the guys who look after those cows the famous gauchos. Even if you have never ridden before its an unforgettable experience riding across the pampas grassland full of cows under a wide open sky with Argentine gauchos. Do it before you die

Share a bottle of Argentine malbec wine with friends, a close one or your lover. Malbec is the definitive wine in Argentina. A wonderfully tasting red wine it has over a short space of time gained an enviable reputation as a wine of quality. Chin chin
Take a tango lesson. The sexiest dance in the world is also one of the most danced in the world these days. Everywhere in Argentine you will find a teacher of tango. Slick back your hair put your sexiest black suit or dress on take your partner in your arms put on your most seriously sexy stern face and imagine you are in the slums of Buenos Aires in the 1900s with a broken heart. Best Enjoyed with a dose of Piazzolla.
Ok these are my five must do things to do that that are typical Argentine. Ask someone else and they may offer others but I doubt it. The great thing about these five is that four of them you can do on La Margarita. The one you cant is tango as the gaucho’s dance what is called folkloric not tango. But if you feel the need to take a tango lesson on La Margarita no doubt we could find a teacher in Tapalque who could give you one
