The Falkland’s or Malvinas Situation– will it affect you if you come here?

La Margarita - If only the world could be as peaceful as this

Every now and again I get a text or email from friends in the UK asking me if I am ok. They have seen a demonstration about the Falkland on the TV and maybe a flag burning session in front of the British Embassy and quite rightly are a bit concerned for me since I am a Brit.  The fact is I am fine and in my everyday life I have no problem being a Brit here nor do I get any stick from the locals about the Falklands (Malvinas).

I remember when I first came here in 2003 friends said to me are you sure you want to go, don’t forget the war, maybe the people will want to give you problems or it will be dangerous for you. In fact it couldn’t be further from the truth. The Argentines I met on that first trip were very friendly and I got no stick from them. Lets face it the war was terrible – I didn’t agree with it but I wasn’t on Maggie list of people to ask their opinion.  I always thought that there must be another way around it – for me all war is terrible. Move on a further eight years and we have, yet again, the political football of the Falklands hitting the news yet again.  However, it is as well to know that here in Argentina the Government pay people to demonstrate and burn the odd flag or two outside the British Embassy – it certainly makes good TV but wide spread unrest there certainly isn’t. The truth is the Falklands situation doesn’t affect me at all and I doubt very much that if you choose to come to this beautiful country that you will be as well. In fact its the reverse, the Argentine people in general really like the Brits and those that have been to UK all say what a great country the UK is and how well they were treated there and they make sure they do the same in their own country. So if the Falkland’s situation is putting you off coming here don’t let it  – it makes great newspaper headlines but the reality is it’s a political football and not much more – the chances of it affecting you are tiny to say the least
